What to Expect at the Farmers Market in April

April is a month of transition at the farmers’ market.

We’re moving out of the heart of winter, but we’re not quite in peak spring or summer abundance just yet. And while that shift can feel a little unpredictable, it’s actually one of the most exciting times to shop local. Because this is when things start to wake up again.

If you’re visiting the Yardley Farmers’ Market this month, here’s what you can expect and how to make the most of it.

Early Signs of Spring

As the weather begins to warm, you’ll likely start to see the first wave of spring produce make its way to the market.

Think:

  • Fresh greens like spinach, kale, and arugula

  • Herbs like chives

  • Early vegetables like radishes and asparagus

These ingredients are light, fresh, and full of flavor; a welcome shift after the heavier foods of winter.

A Mix of Seasons

April isn’t all greens and sunshine just yet. You’ll likely still see:

  • Root vegetables like carrots, potatoes, and beets

  • Storage crops from late fall and winter

  • Eggs, meats, baked goods, and pantry staples

This blend of winter and spring is what makes April unique and gives you more flexibility in how you cook.

Expect the Unexpected

Because we’re so dependent on weather this time of year, what’s available at the market can shift week to week.

Instead of going in with a strict list, try:

  • Walking the market first

  • Seeing what looks fresh and appealing

  • Letting that guide your meals

A Simple Way to Use What You Find

If you’re not sure what to make with early spring ingredients, a simple spinach salad is a perfect place to start.

One beautiful example comes from The Lost Kitchen, a warm spinach salad that’s simple, seasonal, and incredibly satisfying.

Here’s a quick overview:

  • Fresh spinach tossed with a warm bacon vinaigrette

  • Crispy homemade croutons

  • Soft-boiled eggs on top

The warm dressing gently wilts the spinach, creating a dish that feels both fresh and comforting, perfect for this in-between season.

Don’t Forget to Slow Down

Early spring market days can still be chilly, but that’s part of the experience.

Grab a hot coffee and take your time walking through. There’s no rush! This season invites a slower pace.

A Different Kind of Abundance

April may not look like the overflowing tables of summer, but there’s still so much to enjoy.

It’s a quieter kind of abundance. One that encourages you to keep things simple, stay flexible, and reconnect with what’s actually in season.

And before you know it, those early greens will turn into the full, vibrant spread of late spring and summer.

We’ll see you at the market this month, bundled up, coffee in hand, and ready for the start of a new season.
