There’s something especially exciting about the farmers market in June.
The market tables begin to fill with the first true tastes of summer…bright red strawberries, crisp asparagus, leafy greens, fresh herbs, rhubarb, peas, and early zucchini. The flowers are blooming, iced coffees are flowing, and Saturday mornings at the market start to feel like a weekly ritual again.
One of the best parts of shopping at the farmers market is learning to eat with the seasons. Not only does seasonal produce taste better, but it’s often fresher, more nutrient-dense, and grown closer to home. Food harvested locally doesn’t spend days (or weeks) traveling across the country before it reaches your plate. Instead, it’s picked close to peak ripeness and brought straight to market.
And honestly? You can taste the difference.
What’s In Season Right Now
While every week at the market is a little different depending on weather and harvest timing, here are some of the seasonal favorites you’ll likely find throughout June at the Yardley Farmers Market:
Strawberries
June strawberries are one of the true highlights of early summer in our area. Sweet, juicy, and deeply colored and flavorful, local strawberries are nothing like the oversized grocery store varieties shipped from far away.
Not only are they delicious, but strawberries are also rich in vitamin C, antioxidants, and fiber, making them a great choice for supporting immune health and overall wellness.
Easy ways to use them:
Add to yogurt or oatmeal
Toss into salads with goat cheese and nuts
Blend into smoothies
Serve over ice cream
Enjoy straight from the container on the drive home (we won’t judge!)
Asparagus
Fresh local asparagus has a short season, making early June the perfect time to enjoy it while it lasts.
Asparagus is rich in fiber, folate, and antioxidants, making it a great addition to spring and summer meals. It also contains prebiotic fiber, which helps support gut health.
Simple ideas:
Roast with olive oil, salt, and lemon
Throw it on the grill
Add to pasta dishes or grain bowls
Top with a jammy egg for an easy meal
Rhubarb
One of the more unique seasonal finds, rhubarb brings a tart flavor that pairs beautifully with strawberries.
Try it in:
Crisps or crumbles
Homemade jams
Muffins
Strawberry-rhubarb compote
Greens + Herbs
Fresh lettuce, spinach, arugula, and herb plant starts more are abundant this time of year.
Leafy greens are packed with nutrients like folate, potassium, vitamin K, and antioxidants that support everything from heart health to energy levels. Fresh herbs also add incredible flavor while bringing their own nutritional benefits to meals.
Easy tip:Keep herbs in a glass of water in the fridge like fresh flowers to help them last longer.
Bok Choy & Early Summer Veggies
Tender bok choy, peas, scallions, and early zucchini are making their way into the market and are perfect for quick summer cooking.
Bok choy, a type of cruciferous vegetable, contains nutrients that support gut health, digestion, and overall wellness. Cruciferous vegetables like bok choy are also known for containing compounds that may help support the body’s natural defenses against cancer, making them a great addition to a balanced diet.
Simple meal idea:Sauté veggies with garlic and olive oil, toss with noodles or rice, and top with a protein for an easy weeknight dinner.
Making Healthy Eating Feel Easier
One thing we hear often at the market is:“I want to cook more seasonally… I just don’t always know what to make.”
The good news is that shopping local doesn’t have to mean complicated recipes or hours in the kitchen.
Often the freshest foods need the least amount of work.
Eating with the seasons can also help increase variety in your diet naturally. Different fruits and vegetables offer different nutrients, fibers, and plant compounds that support overall health and gut health. When you shop seasonally, variety tends to happen more effortlessly, and meals often become more flavorful and enjoyable too.
A few simple ways to make market shopping easier:
Start with one or two seasonal ingredients each week
Build simple meals around what looks freshest
Keep staples on hand (olive oil, eggs, grains, pasta)
Ask vendors how they like to prepare their products
Don’t overthink it
Some of the best summer meals are also the simplest.
More Than Just Shopping
The farmers’ market is about more than what ends up on your plate.
It’s about community. It’s about slowing down for a few hours on a Saturday morning. It’s about supporting local farmers, bakers, makers, and small businesses who work incredibly hard to bring fresh food and handmade products to our community each week.
It’s neighbors catching up over coffee, dogs strolling through the park, and discovering something new every time you visit.
And as summer continues, the market will keep evolving too with new media channels for vendor updates, and seasonal specialties.
