Spring Cleaning for Healthier Habits

A cold winter it has been! But the ice and snow have finally melted, and it feels like
we’re (maybe!) in the clear for milder temperatures. Spring is symbolic of new
beginnings and is a great time to open those windows, get fresh air in the house, and
get started on your spring cleaning. Maybe you’re also thinking about spring cleaning
up your current routine by setting new goals and/or incorporating new practices. Here
are some ways to get your Spring started right!
Choosing Cleaner Household Products
Do a spring cleaning green-up. To tidy up, skip the chemicals, and use non-toxic
products at home. Natural cleansers include baking soda, eucalyptus oil, and vinegar.
Biodegradable, plant-based castile soap can also be an effective all-purpose cleaner for
many surfaces. YFM vendor Kona Compost and Fill and Flourish offers sustainable and
refillable household products as well as a home composting service. Stop by and chat
with Heather to learn more!
Stock up on (Local) Spring Fruits and Veggies
Visit the Yardley Farmers’ Market (YFM)! Not only will you be supporting growers in your
area but buying local cuts out fossil-fuel intensive transport by air, land and sea. We
guarantee the food will also be fresher, tastier, more sustainable, and much more
nutritious. Bonus: by supporting local farmers, you’ll funnel dollars back into your local
economy, which benefits you and your community. Alternatively, you can join a CSA.
Each of the farmers at YFM offers a CSA and now is the time to sign up! Talk to Gabe
from Abe’s Acres, Ailsa from Love Grows, Mike from Solly’s Farm, or Barbara from
Spring Creek Farm for more info.
Cook More at Home
If you have been relying on takeout more than usual, the change of seasons is a
great time to reassess this habit and commit to cooking more at home. You can
make cooking more exciting by incorporating in-season produce and choosing
lighter, warm-weather dishes to replace winter stews and casseroles.
A little bit of meal prep can go a long way. Try spending an hour or two on the
weekend to prep a healthy protein (like shredded chicken), chop fruits and
vegetables to have on hand for meals, and cook a whole grain to add to recipes
throughout the week. Love Grown Grains carries so many healthy and filling
whole grain options. Be sure to chat with Anne to learn more. She always has
lots of recipes and ideas to share!
Remember to Move!
The sun is shining, and the days are longer, so instead of getting stuck in the car in
traffic, walk or ride a bike to get where you need to go. It’s healthier for you and the
environment. Every mile you do not drive reduces your carbon footprint by nearly one
pound.
